The shopkeeper was still staring after Isabelle when Jean walked out of the back. “You must be incredibly special,” the old man whispered.

Jean flicked a nervous glance in his direction. “Why do you say that?”

“Heaven's sake…She talked to you. Do you know who She is?”

“I, uh…” He cleared his throat. “Who is she?”

“Princess Isabelle,” the old shopkeeper said distinctly. Reverently. “She lives up there, in that tower, all alone. Isolated from the rest of the world. She lives above us all, you know. And yet, one day she came here to the Latin Quarter to build that roof over there. See it? Right across the street.”

“She built that?” Jean asked.

“Herself?”

The old shopkeeper pointed. “Ouai, and I know why she did it too.” The shopkeeper gave Jean one of those old, wise-man looks.

“Oh? Do tell me.”

“Because she's so special. Royal and all. She just wanted to do something ordinary. Be an ordinary person—just once. That's all she ever wanted.” He nodded sagely.

Jean looked out into the crowd after Isabelle. But she was long gone.

“Maybe you would have understood after all,” he said quietly to the shadows.
